JANUARY
1/17
: Martin Luther King Jr. Worship Service at 11 a.m.
Held at the First United Methodist Church of Burbank (700 N. Glenoaks Ave., Burbank, CA 91502)

  • This worship service, held jointly by Burbank First United Methodist Church, Glendale First United Methodist Church and Magnolia Park United Methodist Church, focuses on the life and social justice teachings of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Jenny Smith Greene, the President of Family Promise of East San Fernando Valley, will offer a short sermon on Martin Luther King Jr. and the importance of social justice as part of our faith, and Jacqueline White, the Network Director of Family Promise of East San Fernando Valley, will offer a brief presentation of the families of Family Promise. A lunch follows in Trevor Hall.

1/21: Brian Hanke Piano Concert and Family Promise Fundraiser at 7 p.m.
Held at the Magnolia Park United Methodist Church of Burbank (2828 W. Magnolia Blvd., Burbank, CA 91505)

  • Join us for a delightful evening of piano classics, including Mozart's famous "Rondo alla turca" Sonata and romantic works by Chopin and Liszt. Brian Hanke is a virtuoso concert pianist and recording artist who has performed throughout North America and Europe. He was recognized as a prodigy in his early teens, winning after only one year of study the Vermont MTNA Concerto Competition, an honor which he went on to claim three years in a row. In addition to his solo and chamber music performances; Brian is also an avid independent recording artist. He has released six CDs, featuring music from Liszt to Sibelius to Ligeti. His most famous album, Interconnections, features music by Clementi, Faure, Liszt and Satie, as well as three world-premier recordings of music by American composers. Proceeds from the concert go to "Family Promise," a charitable organization for struggling families.

2/7: Dine-out Fundraiser at Hill Street Cafe - 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. (Lunch hours 12-2pm excluded)

2/13: Family Promise Benefit Concert at 4 p.m.
Held at Glendale First United Methodist Church (134 N. Kenwood St., Glendale, CA 91205)

  • Mezzo-soprano Erika Person and Tenor Eric Werner of New York City will be exploring themes of love and marriage through songs, arias and duets from opera, operetta, classical art songs and musical theatre. Erika grew up in the Los Angeles area. She began singing at Glendale First United Methodist Church at the age of 4 and continued to develop her love for music and singing during her years at St. Mark’s School, Altadena; The Chandler School, Pasadena; Eagle Rock High School, Los Angeles; and the University of Redlands. She received a Masters of Music degree in Opera Performance from Binghamton University, New York. Eric was born in Thailand and spent his early childhood in Manila in The Philippines. He is a graduate of Muhlenberg College and holds a Master of Music in Vocal Performance from the Peabody Conservatory. The couple met in Opera Delaware’s 2006 production of Carmen, and was married just over a year later. They currently reside in New York City where they appear regularly with the New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players (NYGASP) as well as many other opera, oratorio and concert venues in the Greater New York area and across the country. They are delighted to participate in this Family Promise fundraiser. Erika is especially pleased to have this opportunity to give back to the community that nurtured and supported her.
